Desiré Wilson drove the Tyrrell 008 No.41 in the 1979 Race of Champions, a special non-championship Formula 1 event held at Brands Hatch. Wilson, a South African racing driver, made history as one of the few women to compete in Formula 1 during that era. Although she did not score points in F1, her appearance in the Race of Champions is notable because she remains one of the very few women to have participated in an F1 race. The 1979 season was significant in the history of F1, marked by the dominance of the Ferrari team with Jody Scheckter winning the World Championship, and the emergence of turbocharged engines, which were becoming increasingly competitive. Wilson's involvement in the event stands out as a testament to the breaking of gender barriers in motorsport, particularly in a time when the sport was largely dominated by men. The 1979 season was a pivotal one, blending both the classic and turbocharged eras, making it a unique chapter in F1's history.
