The Mercedes-Benz C11 #1, entered by Team Sauber Mercedes for the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans, was driven by experienced endurance racers Jean-Louis Schlesser, Jochen Mass, and Alain Ferté. Schlesser, the reigning World Sportscar Championship Drivers’ Champion, put the C11 on pole position with a remarkable 3:31.270 lap at 231.74 km/h. The car was a spectacular Group C prototype powered by a 5.0-liter twin-turbo Mercedes M119 V8, producing roughly 730 hp and reaching about 346 km/h (215 mph). Its carbon-composite monocoque, Kevlar/carbon bodywork, and refined aerodynamics made it one of the fastest endurance racers of its era. The #1 dominated the race for long periods but unfortunately retired after 319 laps in the 22nd hour when its engine overheated, ending what had looked like a potential victory.
